SWAZILAND IS NOW NAMED ESWATINI

December 2018

 

In April of 2018, King Mswati III of Swaziland announced that Swaziland would renamed Eswatini. In the last quarter of 2018, the online version of the CDC"s Yellow Book was revised to reflect the new name of Eswatini. The specific date of this change is unknown.

The Donor Screening GEO Guide will be updated to reflect the new name Eswatini. References to the previous name of Swaziland will be retained to ensure that malaria-endemic risk is identified for users that refer to the country by either its current or previous name.

DONOR SCREENING GEO GUIDE UPDATE ISSUED: UPDATES TO COSTA RICA, INDONESIA, IRAN, SOUTH KOREA, & VIETNAM

The update to reverse the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica to non-malaria-endemic status according to the CDC's rescinded recommendations (see below) has been combined with updates to existing malaria maps that detail areas where malaria-endemic areas are based or urban/rural distinctions and/or resort areas. 

This update includes:

  • Deletion of the malaria map of Costa Rica

  • Updated malaria maps of Indonesia, Bali Indonesia, Java Indonesia, Nusa Tenggara Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, Incheon, Kangwon-do & Kyonggi-do South Korea, Vietnam, Mekong Delta Vietnam, & Red River Delta Vietnam

  • New detail malaria map of Jakarta & the Thousand Islands Indonesia

  • Updated malaria reference lists (all four lists have been revised)

  • Updated malaria section Table of Contents

  • Updated malaria Technical Notes and malaria map overlays for Indonesia, Iran, South Korea, & Vietnam(Reference Edition only)

  • Revised Donor Screening GEO Matrix

CDC RESCINDS MALARIA PROPHYLAXIS RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR TRAVEL TO THE OSA PENINSULA IN COSTA RICA

This information has been updated in the online version of the CDC’s 2018 Yellow Book. An update to the Donor Screening GEO Guide will be issued in the next few weeks to reflect this change.

CDC ISSUES NEW MALARIA PROPHYLAXIS RECOMMENDATIONS
FOR TRAVEL TO THE OSA PENINSULA IN COSTA RICA

The CDC has issued information on a recent case of malaria in a traveler to the Osa Peninsula in Puntarenas Province of Costa Rica. The CDC is now recommending anti-malaria chemoprophylaxis for travelers to the Osa Peninsula. The CDC has not yet updated the online Yellow Book to reflect this change.

 

CDC: Malaria in U.S. Traveler to Costa Rica

 

Costa Rica has had rare cases and intermittent outbreaks of malaria since 2010 and has been designated as non-malaria-endemic (according to the definition in the FDA Malaria Guidance) in 2013 based on the CDC’s recommendations for mosquito avoidance instead of anti-malaria chemoprophylaxis. 

 

Once the online version of the 2018 Yellow Book is updated to reflect this revised information, an update to the Donor Screening GEO Guide will be issued for Costa Rica.

CDC UPDATES MALARIA PREVENTION RECOMMENDATIONS FOR
TRAVEL TO SOUTH AFRICA

March 29, 2018

 

On March 29, 2018, the CDC issued updated malaria prevention recommendations for South Africa. The CDC's updated information involves recent occurrences of malaria cases in travelers to the Waterberg region of Limpopo Province in South Africa.

 

This area is located outside current malaria-endemic areas in South Africa. The CDC is recommending anti-malaria chemoprophylaxis for travelers to the Waterberg region of Limpopo Province at this time. The CDC has not yet updated the online Yellow Book to reflect this change.

Once the online version of the 2018 Yellow Book is updated to reflect this revised information, an update to the Donor Screening GEO Guide will be issued for South Africa.

CDC ISSUES REVISED MALARIA INFORMATION FOR BRAZIL 
AND BURMA (MYANMAR)

January 31, 2018

 

On January 31, 2018 the CDC issued a notification regarding updated malaria information for Brazil

 

The CDC's revised malaria information for Brazil involves an outbreak of locally transmitted malaria in the town of Wenceslau Guimarães in Bahia State. The CDC is recommending malaria chemoprophylaxis for travelers to the town of Wenceslau Guimarães at this time. The the town of Wenceslau Guimarães now meets the definition of a malaria-endemic area as defined in the FDA's blood guidance on malaria (revised  8/2014). This updated information has been referenced in the online version of the CDC's 2018 Yellow Book.

 

The CDC's updated malaria information for Burma (Myanmar) involves a revision to the recommended malaria chemoprophylaxis for Burma in the online version of the 2018 Yellow Book. The CDC's is now recommending mosquito avoidance instead of malaria chemoprophylaxis for locations above 1,000 m.
