REVISED FDA BLOOD BLOOD GUIDANCE ENDS TRAVEL DEFERRAL RECOMMENDATIONS FOR vCJD RISK
May 23, 2022
The FDA has issued revised Blood Guidance regarding CJD & vCJD. The revised guidance no longer recommends deferral of blood donors for travel to the U.K., France, or Ireland and/or receipt of a blood transfusion in any of these countries. Deferral recommendations for other medical history risk factors remain, but all geographic risk evaluation recommendations have been lifted.

These changes are limited in scope to blood donation. Donor screening requirements for tissue donors still remain unchanged. The Blood Donor editions of the Donor Screening GEO Guide will need to be revised to remove the vCJD section at some point in the future, but this is not an urgent change.
